There’s something about the thrill of storytelling from behind the scenes. I’ve always been fascinated by the power of words, how they can shape perspectives, mold opinions, and inspire change. And yet, in a world that craves visibility and spotlights, my journey as a communications professional has led me down a different path—the quiet, powerful one of being unseen.
I remember my early years. A young graduate, fresh-faced and eager to make a name in broadcast journalism. My dream? To be the face people saw on the nightly news, delivering stories that mattered. I had no idea that my true calling wasn’t in front of the camera, but behind it, crafting narratives, writing press releases, and shaping the reputation of organizations.
September 26th, 2024—another day where my profession demands the art of being heard without being seen. A high-stakes media activity looms. It’s my role to craft the message and ensure the right tone is set. All eyes will be on the Institution, but it’s my words, my strategy, that will steer the conversation.
I realize now that my initial reluctance to step away from the camera wasn’t just about giving up a dream, but about understanding a different kind of power. The power to control a narrative, to manage crises, to lead from the shadows. While others see the spotlight as the pinnacle, I’ve found solace and fulfillment in knowing that I can influence the entire play, even if I’m not on stage.
Today, as I prepare for the task at hand, I reflect on how far I’ve come. Fifteen years in Corporate Communications, and I’ve learned that there is immense strength in being unseen. Just because you’re not the face of the message doesn’t mean you’re not the mind behind it.
For anyone considering a career in communications, or those like me who didn’t begin here but found themselves called to it, know this: Your voice is powerful, even if it’s not your face the world sees.
So as I send off another crafted message, perfectly tailored for today’s audience, I smile to myself. Behind every press release, behind every statement, behind the polished words—is a storyteller unseen, but never unheard.
Until next time,
The Journalist Next Door
Its 3.39am and a very tired Funmi is woken by the thought of children crying repeatedly (seriously, continuous cry is killing) but am gonna help tell the story (my business you know). How does a well fed kid cry in the morning? takes a bath, haves a nap, wakes in tears, has another meal, plays a short while, resumes crying, sleeps again for a shorter while than done in the morning, wakes in tears again, refuses food and expects to be carried while standing all night... who does that??? My fascination? they never seem to have headaches as the routine for some of them is stable. For real, do they have to cry so hard to get anything? arrrrrrgh! (Images withheld cause you don't wanna see what I found on research) ...oops! Have I welcomed you to the month of September? Aii, Happy new month. Its gonna be a great month. Ciao...
